Farming Practices
We consider ourselves stewards of the land. Caring for our soil and waterways is every bit as important as growing marketable yields of our crops. We are not certified organic but we have always used organic practices. Put simply this means we do not use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, we do not use GMO seeds, and we follow farming practices that value soil biodiversity, water quality and waste reduction.
In early 2024 we moved to Willamina, Oregon to begin farming on a piece of land that has been stewarded by Susan Richman of Belle Mare Farm for over 15 years. This move, and working in community with Susan, has offered us the opportunity to shift to even better and stronger regenerative practices. We are able to work together to rotate our fields with cover crops and the chickens and cows of Belle Mare Farm. We are working in union with Belle Mare Farm to generate our own high quality, nutrient dense compost. With the help of Maria Loper of Forest Aged we will be carefully curating and testing our compost for nutrient and microbial levels to for use on our crops. These cover crop, animal rotation and compost practices will help use reduce our reliance on off farm inputs like lime, potting soil and other amendments and reduce or eliminate our need use tractors to till our fields. While the goal is always to reduce these sources we do still use some. Any product used on our farm, alfalfa meal, kelp etc is always certified for organic systems.
Our irrigation source is Willamina Creek, though we do use municipal water for post harvest washing.
